James 3:17 “Heavenly Wisdom for the child of God”part 5

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

This morning’s encouragement brings us to the last two aspects of heavenly wisdom that is presented in this verse. First, let us remember that wisdom that is from The Lord, is about taking His word and living by it. It isn’t a matter of seeking to earn God’s favor. As a Christian, you have been justified by your faith in Christ (Romans 5:1). But, it always matters how one lives in their faith which James certainly makes clear here as he is moved by The Spirit.

If you are living with wisdom from above, you will not show partiality and your life will be lived without hypocrisy. In the second chapter of James’ letter, he presents a hypothetical scenario to his audience as it relates to partiality. In the story, the poor man is asked to sit in a lower place in the assembly, while the well-dressed, wealthy man is given a more prominent place amongst the people. This is not heavenly wisdom, this is earthly wisdom. This is the second thing we must keep in mind. Our Lord is looking at our hearts. We are to treat all with respect, and all the same. Not to esteem one man better than another based on outward appearance. It matters how we live. Christ will be honored if our lives reflect His love. If we live without partiality, Jesus will be magnified in us, Now don’t misunderstand, James is not dealing with an anything-goes kind of attitude. He is speaking about us not showing favoritism as if we will benefit from the one we are favoring.

Lastly, wisdom from above has nothing to do with play-acting. The word translated into English as “hypocrisy”, isanypokritos. It referred to an actor playing a role. For one to name the name of Christ as his or her Savior, and at the same time just put on an act is not a display of wisdom that comes from God. Christians are not perfect, Christians confess their sins to The Lord (1 John 1:9). However, the Christian is going to be a person characterized by truth.

Today, let us display the wisdom that comes from above. Pray for wisdom regularly as The Lord has taught us through James (1:5). God will give you this wisdom! Love as you are loved!
